What is Heart Failure?

When the heart fails to pump blood as well as it should. Blood may start to back up and fluid may build up in the lungs which may cause shortness of breath. Swelling of the feet and legs may also occur if there is too much fluid buildup in the body.

What are the symptoms of Heart Failure?

Heart Failure patients may show no symptoms,

Heart failure can be ongoing (chronic), or it may start suddenly (acute).

Heart failure symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue and weakiness
  • Shortness of breath with activity
  • Shortness of breath when lying down, which makes the patient adds more pillows
  • Buildup of fluid may cause: swelling in the legs, ankles and feet, cough, rapid weight gain, swelling of abdomen
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • Nausea and decreased appetite
  • Chest pain if heart failure is caused by a heart attack

These symptoms may overlap with other medical conditions. Don't diagnose yourself. If you are experiencing the above symptoms, see your doctor as soon as possible. You need a healthcare professional to diagnose your medical conditions.
